Improving the Tea Time concept

We will be meeting again at the Sputnik this week.

AND

We’re trying something new: we will be posting pictures, headlines, articles, etc. on the wall around the room. This will not only provide a unique gallery like decoration for our gathering, but most importantly stimulate conversation and help get past the awkward and redundant getting to know you stuff.

SO

We will provide some pictures, but feel free to bring your own ideas so you can also have a say on the subjects you get to talk about!

See you Tuesday!

_______________________________

A mardi!

Tempo Tea Time in December

One of our members (thank-you Choukri!) found a new location for us to use during the month of December, beginning this Tuesday December 1st.

A few notes from Choukri:

Be aware that the Odéon metro station is closed on the line 4 until December 20th. If you take line 4 you should get off at the St. Germain station or use the line 10 to get to the Odéon station. Start and end times are the same as usual, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

See you Tuesday/ à mardi!

Foreign Subtitles Improve Speech Perception

Foreign Subtitles Improve Speech Perception.

In a new study, published in the open-access journal PLoS One, Holger Mitterer (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics) and James McQueen (MPI and Radboud University Nijmegen) show how you can improve your second-language listening ability by watching the movie with subtitles — as long as these subtitles are in the same language as the film. Subtitles in one’s native language, the default in some European countries, may actually be counter-productive to learning to understand foreign speech.

So, what do you think? Do you watch films with subtitles in the language you are trying to learn or with subtitles in your own language? Do you agree with the above study that watching subtitles in your own language is actually counter-productive? We’d love to hear what you think! Leave a comment below!

Steve Kaufman – The Linguist

We have enjoyed listening to Steve Kaufman ever since we first heard his podcasts a few years ago. We like to read his blog and follow his LingQ program on twitter. His YouTube channel is filled with great videos that can inspire and motivate you in language learning. He is a strong believer that in order to effectively learn a language what you learn has to have meaning for you and you’ve got to enjoy yourself. In the video below he suggests that we should imagine ourselves as part of the culture of the language we are learning – learning English? Picture yourself as American. Learning French? Imagine yourself as a French person. Come to TEMPO Tea Time tonight and immerse yourself in another culture for a little while! Come turn your language learning switch on.

EnglishCentral

My  jaw is dropping as I check out EnglishCentral.com. Their motto is Learn English while watching Videos! and it seems to be exactly what any English learner dreams of. It is a huge collection of videos organized in a system so that you can watch, learn, and interact with clips all at the same time. There are subtitles that allow you to click on each word giving a definition, an example of it’s usage, and it’s phonetic breakdown. You can also record yourself repeating any part of the script and their system will analyze your pronunciation. You are given a score based on how well you pronounce the words. Practice speaking with instant feedback. Their international scoreboard makes improving your pronunciation into a friendly and fun competition. And, they have really good content.
